FAQ

What is Microtonal Music?

Microtonal music is music that uses pitches beyond the 12 notes of the standard Western keyboard, including the “notes between the notes.”

In practice, microtonality opens the door to a far wider spectrum of intervals, tunings, and expressive possibilities. Many voices, instruments, and musical traditions naturally move beyond 12-tone equal temperament, revealing a much larger world of sound. Infinitone helps you explore that expanded harmonic landscape and unlock new dimensions of emotional and artistic expression.

System Requirements

Infinitone is available for Mac and Windows and should work on most modern computers. We have no way to test on all older systems and unsupported operating systems, however it should work on most computers users are running today. If you find it doesn’t work on your system, please report back to us. Infinitone does use significant CPU, so the more you have, the better!

Plugin Wrapper Info

A plugin wrapper will host a Infinitone 2 by itself, or Infinitone 2 AND another synth you wish to retune. To retune another synth, take the MIDI output of the VST3, run it to your synth with MPE mode ON. There are various wrappers on the market, the most stable, effective, and easy to use has proven to be Plogue Bidule. A free, easy to use, and very effective plugin wrapper we recommend is Plugin Buddy.

What Third Party Synths Can I Retune?

The main way to retune third-party synths in Infinitone is with MPE. MPE sends each note on its own MIDI channel, allowing Infinitone to retune many modern synths easily and with broad compatibility. Many popular synths support (both software and hardware) this today, including Omnisphere 3, Serum 2, and others. See this list of compatible synths for further options

Other options:

-Multitimbral synths like Kontakt can also be retuned
-Multi-channel instruments like Pianoteq work especially well

Non-multi-channel synths can still be retuned monophonically, or by using a plugin wrapper and routing each MPE channel from Infinitone into a separate synth instance

Infinitone also supports MTS-ESP, which lets one master plugin retune multiple synth tracks in real time. To use it, install the included Odd Sound MTS-ESP library, then turn MTS-ESP On in Infinitone Settings so Infinitone becomes the master tuner and compatible synths become clients. However, MPE is generally the easier and more compatible option.

Note: Some functions, such as keyboard mapping and beating, are not available when using MTS-ESP.
